Reasons why people change careers
There are many reasons why people change careers, and in this article, we’ll cover only a few, so you get an idea. Of course, this depends on your personal situation and what direction you’d like your life to go.
We’ve already written about the Great Resignation due to the change of attitude in the minds and hearts of countless employees. Well, one could say this is an extension of that. Many realized switching jobs is not enough – they need to change careers, too! And this goes for all generations, it’s not like just one was affected.
The following reasons are not listed by importance as they are purely individual.
Compensation & Benefits
It goes without saying that the salary package is important. It is one of the main reasons why people change careers – they realize there’s a better-paying field that they can get down with! Of course, there are people who are driven solely by compensation and benefits. And that is alright, too. Different people have different interests so there is no reason why your reason to change careers isn’t compensation and benefits.
Passion & Interest
The next reason to change careers is passion for the field. Also, general interest in your work. Do you feel fulfilled? Are you genuinely interested in what you’re doing? When you think about a different job, do you feel sad you don’t have it? Depending on your answers, your reason to change careers might be right in this section of the article!
Career Development Opportunities
This reason is super important to some while irrelevant to others. We’re talking about career development. Most people want to have a path or know that there is an opportunity for growth within the team, department, or company. If this is lacking, you can bet that career development opportunity then becomes a reason why people change careers!
It’s pretty simple if you think about it: who would like to be stuck doing exactly the same thing for years? If we don’t progress, we regress so it is only natural we want career development. This is especially true for ambitious, driven individuals.
Work-life Balance
And last but not least, this is a topic that lot on our minds since the pandemic hit in 2020. Health, family, and emotional well-being. We have learned that work can be done remotely and that homes can be turned into schools. We had to stick together and go through a lot. Most people have been affected by this all and they want more.
So, in other words: if people don’t have a work-life balance, they want to switch jobs or even change careers!
Make sure to find a career that ensures that a job is just a job. Nothing is worth your personal time.
