How to make a shift in my career and change my life?

How to make a career shift is a tough question.

How hard is it to make a career shift? Is it possible to do it and actually change your life? If these questions are on your mind, you probably are wondering a few more things…For example,  Am I too old to switch careers? Where do I start? What if I fail? What should I do first? How do I approach this? Do I need to tell anyone about it?
These are just some of the questions everyone has on their mind. Let’s look into how you can make a career shift and what is out there!

Let’s start at the beginning

First of all, let’s all acknowledge something: we spend many hours at work. If your work is not pleasant, if you don’t enjoy it, if you have no room for growth, chances are, you are not happy. So when we talk about making a shift in a career, we have to understand that we will also change our lives.

If we are happy with our jobs, we will be happier overall. And that can only bring good things to us and those around us.

Think outside the box

Sounds like a cliche, but it’s actually true. If you want to get out there, make a career shift, and change your life, you will have to do something you’ve never done before. And that requires good old thinking outside the box.

Some cities have a wide range of openings and you can literally choose what you’d like to do. Therefore, don’t get stuck in your own head! Get out there and try things. That is the only way you’ll know what you like.

Experience is important, but if you see a job post you really like, you can start shifting your career in that direction!

The first thing you have to realize is that you don't like your job.

The first step in a career switch

Let’s say you’ve been in the hospitality industry for years, but you’ve seen a job ad for a legal secretary which looked perfect!

Even though you have no relevant qualifications or experience for the role, what you can do straight away is check what courses there are for this field. You enroll in the course and add it to your CV. Now you do have something relevant – the course you completed!

Due to your lack of experience, you will most likely be offered a lower salary. But, if you really want to make a career shift, you will have to go through it sooner or later.

Volunteering & Internships

Another option would be to reach out to the company which posted the job ad and ask if you can volunteer or do an internship.

A lot of things depend on your life situation, but we would recommend you see what’s out there and find something you really like.
After all, it is much easier to get up in the morning when you don’t hate your job.

Current job problems

If you do hate your job, put some energy into revamping your CV, and start applying. Enroll in a course. Educate yourself on available opportunities. Try things. Whatever you do, do not stay at your current job if you don’t like it.

And remember, don’t give up until you find what you like.
