Who are Career Coaches?
Did you know that being a career coach is an actual career choice? Career coaching is booming!
And, one thing I can tell you for sure is that we get a lot of questions about it. People wonder why the occupation exists, who needs it, who is a career coach, and what is it that they do…interesting topic for sure!
To explain it briefly: career coaching is booming because there are a lot of opportunities! And when people have endless possibilities, they can completely freeze. Our world is rapidly changing and anxiety is more common than you think. Career Coaches are here to help you navigate this sea of possibilities. That is why we offer an Exploring Options session – a one-off meeting where we talk about your goals, desires, and motivation.
Who has ever heard of a career coach?
However, to be fair, when we talk about career coaching, that’s relatively new. For example, if you talk to your parents or older relatives, they will tell you choosing a career wasn’t something they were super concerned with. Certain occupations were needed in their place of residence or country, and that was it. I am not saying they didn’t have choices; I’m just saying they didn’t have as many options as we do in today’s world!
For this reason, people need guidance. And that’s precisely where a good career coach comes in handy. Often, we can’t be objective when it comes to ourselves and we need other people’s input. This is the case when we ask for our friend’s opinion on our clothes or our spouse’s advice on a work situation.
If you think about it, we do exactly the same when we visit a psychotherapist or hire a fitness trainer.
We pay for their expertise. In return, they guide us and help us achieve our goals, whether it’s overcoming a behavioral issue or losing weight.
In the same way, career coaches help people focus their efforts on choosing a career they love. A good career coach will help you focus.
They will do the same thing for your career as a fitness trainer will do for your physique.
What can’t a career coach do?
That said, it’s important to note that no career coach can decide instead of you. You need to take responsibility for your life and think about your actions.
If you do hire a career coach, you need to manage your expectations. Meaning career coaches are here to talk to you about your interests, share insights about job markets, and motivate you to find out what fulfills you. They often have tests and exercises which can help you with these things. However, they honestly can’t tell you what to do. Similarly, a good therapist will never tell you what to do, they’ll just listen and ask questions. You need to bear that in mind. A career coach is there to help you, but they can’t decide instead of you.
Do you need a career coach?
