Sample message to recruiter on LinkedIn after applying for a job

Reach out to recruiter on LinkedIn

If you see a recruiter on LinkedIn, it’s perfectly fine for you to get in touch. The only thing you need to keep in mind is that it shouldn’t be a random reaching out. Always target recruiters based on the roles posted and the jobs you’ve applied to.

As we’ve written before, LinkedIn is a powerful platform for professionals. And it’s filled with recruiters. Some sites say over 70% of recruiters use LinkedIn to find and screen candidates. That’s huge! Never before have we been just a click away from speaking directly to an individual recruiter.

So, you better use that to your advantage and boost your job search!

We’ve written before that you shouldn’t hesitate and just reach out to a recruiter on LinkedIn. However, if you need some help in putting the message together – keep on reading!

What to write to a recruiter on LinkedIn?Send a Connection Request

Firstly, it would be good if you connect with the recruiter on LinkedIn. Send them a connection request and maybe write a few words.

Go with the classic:

“Hi, I’m Jenny, an experienced project manager and I’d like to connect and explore opportunities within Amazon.”

Why is this a good sample message for connection requests? Because you briefly said who you were, you covered your expertise, and you made it clear you know where they work.

Follow Up Once You’re Connected

Once the recruiter on LinkedIn accepts your connection request, you’re nearly there!

Your next step is to send a message for the particular job ad you’ve seen. Remember to apply for the job first because that way, they’ll have you in their system. And it’ll be fairly easy to discuss the application.

So, what should you write in the message to a recruiter on LinkedIn after you’ve applied for the role?

First of all, we’d suggest going straight to the point. Recruiters are busy and they receive tons of messages daily. You want to be mindful of their time. Don’t share information they can easily find on your LinkedIn profile.

Secondly, keep it short and simple. If they want to learn more about you, they will check your application, your LinkedIn profile, and, ultimately – ask you.

We’ll share a few suggestions. See what best suits your situation. Mix and match if needed.

One important thing to note is that we encourage everyone to reach out to recruiters. You never know when it can bring you so much-needed change.

Option 1

Hi Brian,

I just wanted to let you know that I applied for the role of Senior Business Analyst. Can you please tell me if there’s anything else I can do to express my interest? Thank you so much for your time!

Option 2

Hi Chris,

Thanks again for connecting!

I applied for the role you’re sourcing for, and I was hoping we could set up a time to discuss my application in more detail.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thank you.

Option 3

Hi Kelly,

I noticed you are the recruiter sourcing for the role of Services Officer. Just wanted to let you know that I applied since I’m sure I tick all the boxes.

I would really love to know what are the next steps, can you please advise?

Thank you so much, I appreciate your time.

So, to conclude, what you should do is open the communication channel. A brief message that might put you on their radar. You’ve literally got nothing to do.

What happens next?

Depending on whether they replied or not, you take your application to the next level. Usually, recruiters do reply. Sometimes, they’ll get back to you in a day, sometimes a few weeks. It really depends on how much time they’ve got to fill out a role. We’d recommend applying for other jobs as well, just so you don’t waste time.

However, there’s one important thing you need to keep in mind. Recruiters alone can’t put you on the top. Sure, they can advocate but you still need to do all the work. Prepare well for job interviews, learn what you’ve said in your CV, study the company and the job ad, check what other people are saying about the interview process. There’s plenty you can do.
