A Job Shouldn’t Cost You Your Mental Health

A job should not cost you your mental health

There’s a positive trend nowadays – we talk about the importance of mental health more than ever. If you think about it, many companies promote wellness initiatives, offer mental health days, and encourage self-care. Yet, despite these efforts, many professionals find themselves in a downward spiral. And they end up sacrificing their well-being for the sake of their careers.

Based on our experience, too many people are struggling. And we’re not talking about physically demanding jobs, we’re talking about all jobs. It doesn’t matter the type of job; no one is immune. Lately, we’ve had a series of professionals reaching out who are in a dangerous position.

So, what is happening?

People push themselves beyond their limits, and it’s more than “just” burnout they’re coping. They actually are relying on medication – sleeping pills, anti-depressants, mood stabilisers – you name it! All for the sake of getting through the week.

If you’re one of them, it’s time for a reality check! If your job is driving you to pop pills to get through the week, it’s time to take a step back and rethink your priorities. Hopefully, this article will help you gain a fresh perspective on your (professional) life.

Your job is just a job

Here’s a good thing to keep in mind: a career does not define self-worth. Your job should be a part of your life, not the sole reason for your existence or your sole purpose. Yet, many professionals find themselves trapped in a vicious cycle of surviving the week and living for the weekend. If you need medication or other substances to show up to work, that’s a red flag. It is not a badge of honour.

How to approach it? Think of your job as a means to a goal. And your goal is to live a healthy, fulfilled life. So, if you feel exhausted and miserable, something needs to change. And nothing will change unless you change it.

You have optionsNo job is worth your mental health

Even in a challenging job market, alternatives exist. There is a job out there for you that will suit you better.

For some, it can be a step back in responsibility, a shift to a new company, or even a career change. But, there are ways to regain control over your life and your mental health. The key is recognising when it’s time to do something before you reach a breaking point.

What can you do?

Firstly, you need to acknowledge what is happening and understand the seriousness of your situation.

Then, update your CV. Research job opportunities, and explore other workplaces. Healthy, balanced and fulfilling careers do exist, but you need to seek them out.

You’re not doing anyone any favours by risking your mental health for the sake of a job. No job is worth compromising your health.
